Shampoo ingredients: the basic ingredients you should know

1. Sulfates

This is a big one because sulfates have gotten a bad rap lately, but many people don't know what sulfates really are. Sulfates are simply surfactants, also known as soap substances, that deep clean your hair. There are many shampoos on the market that are lower in sulfates, a fact that helps make the formulas a little gentler.

2. Water

Water is usually the first ingredient in most shampoos, as it usually makes up the largest amount of the shampoo formula. It is an essential ingredient because it helps to blend all the other ingredients together and it also acts as a moisturizing ingredient. Need to try a moisturizing shampoo?

3. Silicones

Tip: Any ingredient you see in a shampoo with a "-cone" suffix at the end is silicone. Silicones help hair slip and are a key reason why hair feels smooth after washing; they give that telltale "slip". Another reason you should like silicones is that this ingredient also helps curb frizz.

4. Glycol Distearate

Ever squeeze shampoo into your hands and notice that it has a nice pearly sheen? You can thank glycol distearate for that. This ingredient is used in many shampoos designed to help condition hair.

5. Sodium chloride

Let's be honest: If you came across a super hydrating shampoo, would you still use it? Do you think it would clean your hair well? Probably not. That's where sodium chloride comes in. This ingredient is used to help thicken your shampoo.

6. Daily Chemical Grade HPMC

Daily chemical grade hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is a white or slightly yellow powder, and it is odorless, tasteless and non-toxic. HPMC chemical can dissolve in cold water and organic solvents to form a transparent viscous solution. The water liquid has surface activity, high transparency, and strong stability, and its dissolution in water is not affected by pH. It has thickening and anti-freezing effects in shampoos and shower gels, and has water retention and good film-forming properties for hair and skin.

6. Carbopol

Ever wonder why certain products instruct you to shake well before use? It's because of the simple fact that shaking causes shampoo ingredients to move around and mix together. You don't usually see this instruction on shampoo products. Why? Thanks to carbopol, the ingredients float in your shampoo without having to be shaken before use.

7. Fiber Actives

Ingredients such as fiber actives are critical to damage repair shampoo products because they are the ingredients that help repair damage to the hair cuticle.
